Melbourne wedding celebrant

Your ceremony can be the best part of your wedding.

I’m Josh Withers. I create personal, unscripted wedding ceremonies across Melbourne and Victoria—with clear legal guidance, professional sound, and words that feel like the two of you.

The ceremony

The part where the wedding becomes a marriage.

A Melbourne wedding celebrant does two connected jobs: makes sure your marriage is legally valid, and creates the ceremony in which you make that commitment. As a Commonwealth-registered marriage celebrant, I guide the paperwork, meet the legal requirements, lead the ceremony, and lodge the completed documents.

But legality is the baseline. The real work is making a room full of people feel what is happening. Every ceremony is prepared from scratch, shaped around your relationship and delivered as a conversation—not a script held between us.

What I bring

Good words, calm planning, and a properly heard ceremony.

A ceremony with your fingerprints on it

We talk about your story, your people, your values, and the way you want the moment to feel. I prepare a one-off ceremony that belongs to you both.

The legal detail, explained plainly

I guide you through the Notice of Intended Marriage, identity documents, legal wording, witnesses, certificates, and registration without letting paperwork take over the wedding.

Sound that carries the moment

Professional Electro-Voice speakers and RØDE microphones help every guest hear clearly and give your videographer clean ceremony audio to work with.

A full-time celebrant who is present

Celebrancy has been my full-time work since 2009. I answer, prepare, travel, arrive early, read the room, and give the day the attention it deserves.

The approach

Prepared, not recited.

“The ceremony is the anchor of the whole celebration.”

I prepare deeply, then speak naturally. That gives the ceremony shape without making it feel rehearsed or remote. There is room for joy, nerves, laughter, quiet, and the unexpected things that make a live wedding feel alive.

Most ceremonies land at around 18 minutes: long enough to say something meaningful, short enough to keep the room with you. The exact shape comes from who you are and what you want the ceremony to hold.

How it works

Four useful steps before the big one.

  1. 01

Start with your date and place

Tell me where and when you are getting married, who will be there, and what you would like the ceremony to feel like. I’ll reply with availability and the service that fits.

  2. 02

    Complete the legal essentials

Your Notice of Intended Marriage must generally be given to an authorised celebrant at least one month and no more than 18 months before the wedding. I’ll tell you what documents are needed and what happens when.

  3. 03

    Make the ceremony yours

We talk in person or by video about your relationship, your people, and the tone you want. I help with vows and shape the ceremony so every part earns its place.

  4. 04

    Get married

I arrive prepared with the legal documents and professional audio, lead the room with a calm presence, and give you the space to be fully there with each other.

About Josh

A human with a very useful job at your wedding.

I’m a full-time marriage celebrant, husband to Britt, dad to three kids, former radio broadcaster, and a professional speaker who has spent more than fifteen years learning how good words work in a room.

I’m from Tasmania and work regularly in Melbourne and across Victoria. Travel is part of how I work, not an unusual exception. We can plan intelligently by video, meet when it matters, and make sure the wedding-day details are settled well before I arrive.

I create civil ceremonies and faith-centred ceremonies when that is part of your story. In both, the aim is the same: a marriage ceremony that is personal, legally sound, and unmistakably yours.

Meet Josh properly

Melbourne and Victoria

City celebrations, winery weekends, coast, country.

I work throughout Melbourne’s CBD and suburbs, the Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, Geelong and regional Victoria. Tell me the venue when you enquire and I’ll confirm availability, travel, and the right service for your plans.

Practical questions

Before you enquire.

Is Josh based in Melbourne?

Josh is from Tasmania and works regularly in Melbourne and across Victoria. He has been travelling for weddings throughout Australia and internationally since 2009.

Can we plan the ceremony by video?

Yes. Many planning conversations work well by video. Australian marriage law also requires an authorised celebrant to meet separately and in person with each party before the marriage is solemnised; Josh will make that timing clear for your plans.

How long is a Josh Withers ceremony?

Most ceremonies are around 18 minutes. It is enough time to make the moment meaningful without losing the room, and the precise length depends on what you want included.

Does Josh provide a PA system?

Yes. Josh brings professional Electro-Voice speakers and RØDE microphones so your guests can hear clearly and your videographer can capture clean ceremony audio.

Does Josh conduct civil and Christian ceremonies?

Yes. Josh creates civil ceremonies and Christian or faith-centred ceremonies, always prepared around the couple rather than taken from a standard script.
